I Now Walk... Into The Jungle
I suppose my motivation for writing this blog is to stay in contact with friends and family and to inform those who plan on going to Ghana what they may expect to encounter. My hope is that this “writing of my thoughts and experiences / blog” will help shorten the gap between us over the next few months and act as a tool for future travellers. That being said, if you’re reading this, I probably know you and therefore, I probably love you, (in that brotherly love kind of way) so thanks for reading and I’ll do my best to entertain.
Over the last year I have been anticipating this, “my Great African Adventure”, and have exposed myself to everything I can get my hands on concerning West Africa. This exposure has included watching blockbuster films such as Blood Diamond and Last King of Scotland, reading thorn tree travel forums, skimming the pages of travel guides and encyclopaedias, and talking with people who have lived in West Africa before. However, no matter how many movies I watch or textbooks I read, I still cannot claim to know much of anything if I have not been and experienced the country and the people within. So, this is certainly going to be a changing of the tides for me and I plan to come out with a much clearer picture of what West African culture is like and hopefully transcend some of that picture to you.
Now, I have a question for you. Ready? Ok, well if someone were to ask you, “Walk through this door and your whole world will be flipped upside down. Everybody you meet and everything you encounter from this point on will be new to you. You will see things that you didn’t know existed and you will think thoughts that you didn’t know one could think. You might not come back in one piece, but for the next chunk of your life you will breathe adventure.” This is paraphrased dialogue of a book I once read, so I am not claiming to be the founder of the question but I think it’s one worth asking this audience. So, what do you say?
Tomorrow morning, I am going to say yes.
